Dataset

The dataset has profilometer trace data for an aluminum workpiece machined with the following parameters:

  • Tool nose radius: 1/64 inches
  • Feed per revolution: 7.4, 8.8. 9.4 thousandth inches per rev.
  • Depth of cut: 0.0002 inches
  • Surface cutting speed: 250 feet-per-minute

Please answer the following:

  1. For each of the cases, calculate the Ra, Rq, Skew, and Kurtosis parameters measuring surface roughness.
  2. If you had to differentiate between roughness and waviness for this surfaces, how would you do it (qualitatively)?
  3. How does the calculated Ra value compare with the theoretical Ra value for turning?
  4. Also provided in the data set is surface finish data obtained after measuring these surfaces in a white light interferometer. How does your surface finish parameters compare to the ones from the interferometer data? Why, if any, do you see discrepancies?
